WEB Reece Walsh recaps his Broncos debut game against the Cowboys Fri 10 Mar 2023 Share on
WEB Reece Walsh gave away an early penalty but everything he touched after that second-minute transgression turned. As far as first impressions go Broncos recruit Reece Walsh could not have asked for anything better than his NRL debut.
The fullback, who joined Brisbane after two seasons with the Warriors, had a hand in three of the Broncos' four tries, including a brilliant solo effort where he stepped North Queensland fullback Scott Drinkwater before racing away to score under the posts.
Walsh also set up winger Corey Oates and centre Herbie Farnworth with try assists and finished the game with eight tackle busts and 144 run metres.
"I never dreamt that I would score on debut but I'll definitely remember that," Walsh said.
"To get the win and our first two points for the year is something that I'll remember forever."
Walsh's performance was even more impressive given that he had been forced to train on his own for a week after being a close contact of a COVID-19 case.
"It was tough training by myself but I knew that I had to do whatever it took to get ready for this game," Walsh said.
"I'm just glad that I could come out here and play well for the boys."
Broncos coach Kevin Walters was full of praise for Walsh's debut performance.
"He was outstanding," Walters said.
"He's a real talent and he's only going to get better with more games under his belt."
Walsh's debut was also a welcome boost for the Broncos, who had lost their opening game of the season to the Eels.
"It was a good win for us," Walters said.
"We needed to bounce back after last week's loss and we did that in style."
The Broncos will now have a week off before they face the Roosters in Round 3.
